Additive manufacturing that takes advantage of more than 3 axes has several benefits that make it an inevitable future of rapid prototyping.

  1. no support structure needed means less time and material in printing
  2. better surface quality (since stair-stepping is avoided)
  3. strong parts (since weak parallel shear planes can be avoided)

The challenge is not in making new hardware as many robot arms and CNC mills can be co-opted for additive. Rather, the challenges lie in the computational approaches in defining new printing paths.
